Mercato Metropolitano Marrakech is a new food market under construction at the heart of a major hospitality development in Morocco. Surrounded by four five-star hotels, it acts as a central hub linking international visitors with local residents. Part of the wider Mercato Metropolitano network — a global movement celebrating food culture and community — the Marrakech edition reinterprets the atmosphere of traditional souks within a contemporary setting. Designed with Greig & Stephenson Architects and local partners, the market combines Moroccan craft and colour with global cuisines, creating a vibrant junction for cultural exchange. Opening is scheduled for mid-2026.

Mercato Metropolitano Marrakech marks the third chapter in our continuous journey with Mercato Metropolitano, following earlier projects in Barcelona and Lisbon. Each collaboration translates the network’s ethos of celebrating food as a universal language into a different cultural setting. In Marrakech, that ethos meets the vibrancy of Moroccan tradition and the international character of a new hospitality district. The market occupies the central position within a development of four five-star hotels, conceived as a connective hub where hotel guests, international travellers and local residents all converge. Our role as lead design architect covers the entire interior environment: from overall spatial planning and kiosk design to wayfinding and the creative direction of the visitor experience. The project is developed in collaboration with Greig & Stephenson Architects, specialists in market design, together with local architectural partners. The design concept reinterprets the qualities of a Moroccan souk. Rather than presenting the whole market in a single glance, the space unfolds in fragments. A central avenue of columns structures the layout and naturally draws visitors towards the main stage, a focal point for music, performances and seasonal events. From this core, smaller passages and junctions open up, encouraging guests to wander through corners and alleys. This strategy captures the sense of discovery that defines the atmosphere of traditional markets. Materiality and colour were carefully chosen with the Mercato team to resonate with Moroccan craft and architectural language. Textured surfaces, rich tones and bold contrasts form a backdrop for the diversity of food cultures represented in the kiosks. Each stall is designed as a distinct yet modular unit, offering flexibility for traders while contributing to a cohesive whole. Wayfinding is integrated into this system, guiding movement without diminishing the spontaneity of exploration. The project also responds to its unique position at the meeting point between private luxury and public life. By embedding a food market within a cluster of hotels, the development creates a civic stage open to both residents and visitors. It offers not just a place to eat but also a setting for cultural dialogue, where food is interwoven with performance, craft and community events. As construction advances towards completion in mid-2026, Mercato Metropolitano Marrakech is set to become both a landmark and a junction — a celebration of cultural exchange rooted in Morocco yet open to the world.
