House T is a private residence for a retired couple, located in a mountainous region in the northeast of Japan. The clients acquired an approximately 8,000 m² forested site along the Tone River, with the intention of creating a modest home embedded within nature. The commission encompasses both the design of the house and its surrounding landscape. The design draws from the character of the site, where numerous rocks are scattered across the forest floor. This condition suggests a geological memory, indicating that the area was once part of a riverbed before gradually becoming forest over time. In response, the project explores how architecture might be positioned between two readings of the ground: one surface lifted lightly above the terrain, as if floating, and another that appears to flow continuously through the forest. The house is conceived as a spatial mediation between these conditions, allowing habitation to emerge within the shifting relationship between land, water, and time.
